C96: The chapel of Jevaux

The chapel of Jévaux (also spelled Gévaux) is located in a clearing in the middle of the Vieille Poirière forest, within the municipality of Jouy-sous-les-Côtes, which is the origin of its name. Indeed, before the construction of the chapel, there was a "farm of Jouy Val" at this location, Jouy, of a Gallo-Roman toponymic type "Godiacu", based on the Christian personal name Godius, thus Jévaux means the "Valley of Joy".

A first chapel was built in the 12th century by the Premonstratensian monks from the abbey of Rangéval (municipality of Corniéville), near a spring reputed to be miraculous. In modern times (16th century), it was tended by a hermit. It was destroyed during the Revolution (1791).

The current chapel, in neo-Gothic style, was rebuilt at the site of the previous one and inaugurated in 1891. It is topped with a belfry featuring an exposed bell crowned with a small stone Celtic cross. Each year, a pilgrimage takes place which was traditionally held during the feast of the Nativity of Our Lady, on September 8, with an open-air mass and procession in the clearing. In recent years, it has been moved to August 15.
