Markup: yellow circle.
It is recommended to wear good hiking shoes, also bring water in a backpack, keep your dog on a leash, and respect the trails.
Departure: Church square. 1/Take Henry Street to the intersection (200 m), where you will turn right towards the campgrounds: Les Bans-La Tour.
Follow the markings (Yellow Circle) to the next intersection. Take James Wiese Street to the right at the restaurant La Mangeoire.
You will pass in front of the Domaine des Bans campsite and then the EHPAD Forfelet.
2/At the intersection, go right, towards Maison Pierre Nicole (Yellow Circle).
3/At the hamlet of Vichibure, turn left (Yellow Circle).
On the facade of the first house, notice the date of its construction (1821), its sandstone pediment, and two inscriptions H10. CH6*.
The next house, dated 1723, is an old prison that belonged to the counts of Martimprey. On the southeast facade, there remains a small window in flamboyant Gothic style.
At the next intersection, turn right towards La Folie (Yellow Circle).
After a short climb on a paved path, continue on the dirt road. On your right, view of Corcieux, its bell tower, and in the background, the Hennefête forest. 300 m later, on your left, notice granite blocks*.
Continue straight ahead (Yellow Circle) on the pleasant forest path that crosses the locality of La Folie.
4/At an intersection, take the right path descending towards the ruins of an old mill powered by the Bans stream. In the 18th century, many mills existed in the municipality of Corcieux. The mill of La Folie pressed flax and rapeseed. The millstone was powered by a 4-meter diameter oak water wheel. The oil extracted was used for lighting. Later, this mill was used for wheat flour production.
5/Facing the ruins, turn right onto a small unmarked path that will take you back to the hamlet of Vichibure.
6/Then take the paved road to the right. 50 m ahead, on your right, you can make a round trip to “L'aumônerie de Pierre Nicole,” an old hospice from the 19th century.
Then return to Corcieux via the same route as on the way there.
See:
HISTORICAL INSCRIPTIONS: During the German occupation in 1940, houses were requisitioned to house the enemy army. On the facade, inscriptions specified the number of men (H 10) and horses (CH 6) that could be accommodated there. In other houses, the letter O indicated that one or more officers were lodged there.
GEOLOGY AROUND CORCIEUX: Around Corcieux, there are sandstone massifs sometimes with pudding stone (or conglomerate), like at Roche des Corbeaux, granite zones (Vichibure, Champ de Roches...), and others where sandstone and granite have formed a metamorphic rock: the migmatite of Gerbépal found at the Tête de Nayemont among others.
