In Picard popular folklore, the "houppeux" refers to a nocturnal creature that calls out to travelers. In the region, it has also become the affectionate nickname given to Master Owl. Indeed, long-eared owls and other night owls have made their home near Verneuil-sous-Coucy, whose privileged location near the Coucy-Basse state forest is conducive to the nesting of nocturnal raptors. In the evening or at night, it is common to hear their song, sometimes sweet, sometimes shrill, always captivating. A gentle walk, to succumb as a family to the charms of the undergrowth!
