Clochers en vallée de l'Automne

The arrival on the plateau unveils the tortuous and very steep valley of Autumn where the villages of Fresnoy la Rivière and Morienval hang. The existence of steep limestone slopes has facilitated the extraction of freestone from which the buildings in the valley are built. These quarries were then used to grow mushrooms. The river was very important for the life of the villages. Numerous washhouses line the circuit, as well as a bief (canal that fed the waterfall of the mill) visible at Pondron on the left after the crossroads. The valley bottoms are mainly used for poplar cultivation.

The event of the 35 bell towers is an opportunity to discover the beautiful churches of the Autumn Valley. It takes place every two years and attracts many art and history lovers. You can visit the churches of the different villages such as the church of Saint-Denis in Fresnoy la Rivière or the abbey church of Morienval, famous for its warhead crusades, a prefiguration of the Gothic style. On this occasion the churches and chapels of the hamlets are also opened.
