Starting from the church in Chiry-Ourcamp, this 6 km walking trail is mainly located in the forest. The route leads to the site of the "Five Pillars"... a quarry used as a shelter by both armies during the Great War.
The site known as the "Five Pillars" was on the front line of the First World War. The quarry was a coveted shelter for the armies. It was occupied for a long time by the German army, then by the French army, and again by the German army for a few weeks. The site takes its name from five ancient turned pillars of the quarry, isolated by collapses due to over-exploitation. They form a kind of five-legged table, some ten meters high.
Once used as a mushroom farm, the "five pillars" are now located on a 4x4 route.
Numerous French and German sculptures and graffiti can be seen on the site.
Guided tours of the 5 Pillars quarries are only available with the assistance of the "Patrimoine de la Grande Guerre" association.
