On September 12, 1914, the First Battle of the Marne has just come to an end. The Germans are forced to retreat north and cross the Aisne. Its course is dominated by high plateaus on top of which are underground quarries, the “creutes.” They provide sought-after shelters for the military. In a few days, the war of movement gives way here to a war of position. To protect themselves from the German artillery fire, the French then begin to dig their first trenches.
