The Belcastel castle (private property) was founded around 1040, around a pre-Romanesque chapel from the 9th century. It was completed in the 15th century by Alzias de Saunhac, Lord of Belcastel, who also built the church and the bridge. In the 17th century, the fortress was left abandoned. In 1975, Fernand Pouillon, a genius architect, bought the ruins of the castle and restored it. He passed away in 1986 and is buried in the village cemetery. The castle is private property but can be visited. Subsequently, the Municipal Council undertook the restoration of the village, which was completed in 2003. Since 1990, Belcastel has been classified among the "Most Beautiful Villages in France."
