From the castle, the route leads to the peaceful meadows of the Saône valley. The site of Varennes-les-Mâcon has been frequented since early times; many flints dating back to 11,850 BC and the remains of two villages were discovered during the creation of the lake. Here, one walks in the footsteps of many populations who once followed the river by the Via Agrippa.
