Description by the author

This hike takes you to the heart of Auxois, where you can explore its natural and historical heritage. Along the way, you will discover the remnants of the Camp de Myard. This is an ancient fortified Neolithic settlement of the first herders in Auxois. It is an exceptional witness to the prestigious architectures of the Bronze Age, from the 4th millennium to the 9th century BC (brochure for sale at the Vitteaux tourist office). The main architectural remains visible today are those of the last occupation at the end of the Bronze Age: rampart and towers. The weapons, tools, ornaments, and pottery discovered at the site are preserved at the Archaeological Museum of Dijon (before embarking on the trail, stop by the Vitteaux tourist office and learn about the exhibition dedicated to the Camp de Myard, presented in its premises).

Then admire the church of Vesvres from the early 13th century with its bell tower topped by an octagonal arrow-shaped spire, a remodeled nave, and a trilobed portal. When you cross Vitteaux, whether at the start or on your return, you will pass over the Brenne. This watercourse springs in Sombernon and feeds one of the reservoirs of the Burgundy Canal, the Grosbois reservoir. In the past, it brought its waters to the ditches of the medieval fortifications. In Vitteaux, don’t miss the halls, the listed houses, the tower, the ramparts, the church (organs, sculpted galleries)... And for the younger ones, we invite you to discover on this route "The Witch's Soup," to be made with family whenever you want, for free. Booklets and recipe sheets are available online and at the tourist office of the Terres d'Auxois (Précy-sous-Thil, Semur-en-Auxois or Vitteaux).
