Alsace cycle circuit - The banks of the Rhine and the Lauter valley

The canalized Rhine ends at Beinheim where it returns to its natural course. One follows the river along the high water levee by EuroVelo 15, crossing Rhine forests and nature reserves until Lauterbourg, the eastern tip of Alsace. The route then heads west and takes the former embankment of the Lauterbourg-Wissembourg railway to reach the capital of northern Alsace via the Hardt racetrack. The return to Beinheim allows you to discover very typical villages, among the most beautiful in Alsace. From Beinheim to Munchhausen, the banks of the Rhine are rich in preserved natural sites. The heronry of Beinheim, with its fragile biotope, is particularly monitored. Munchhausen and the delta of the Sauer form an astonishing landscape populated by migratory birds: gray herons, wild geese, or sparrowhawks. The forest is unique in Europe where ash trees, pedunculate oaks, and field elms grow up to thirty meters high. To the west of Lauterbourg, at Niederlauterbach, one will find balance pumps, the last witnesses of an oil industry that thrived in the region until the mid-20th century.
