Old railway Molsheim - Romanwiller

To get an idea of the route, a small visit to the garden train (scale 1/20) inspired by the former Molsheim-Saverne railway and installed on a surface of 30m x 8m in the courtyard of the Molsheim hospital is essential. The almost straight and well-shaded greenway that first leads from Molsheim to Marlenheim, the northern gateway to the Alsace Wine Route, is bordered on either side by vineyard slopes. Beyond the peaceful wine-growing village, the route takes the Kronthal gorge towards Romanswiller. Its steep cliffs, from which stones were taken for the construction of the Strasbourg Cathedral, are now very popular among climbing enthusiasts. At the exit of the gorge lies the charming small town of Wasselonne, which retains important elements of the former castle dominated by the square tower at its center. The route ends at the foot of the old Romanswiller station. 34 km of the 48 km of tracks were laid in 1862. In 1877, Molsheim was connected to Saverne, and a double track was built in 1932. In turn, the decision was made to close the line to passenger traffic in 1969, and then to freight traffic in 1988.
