The first municipal school was established in 1831 and, well before the rest of France, welcomed both girls and boys. The spatial expansion and the very rapid increase in population resulting from industrial development led to the establishment of schools in the neighborhoods. The German annexation of 1871, which made school mandatory, accelerated the process. Schools were set up in former buildings or were the subject of specific constructions, which, starting from the early 20th century, sought to respond to the imperatives of pedagogy, hygiene, and aesthetics. The departure took place on Rue des Franciscains.
