The terrible battle of Donon on August 20 and 21, 1914 marks the beginning of the French retreat. This confrontation sees nearly 500 to 2,000 dead littering the slopes of Donon after 12 hours of artillery exchanges and bayonet attacks. In 1916, the German authorities set up about 180 pink sandstone steles engraved in memory of the French and German soldiers who fell here. The Petit Donon, after having been a battlefield, becomes an open-air necropolis for soldiers from both camps.
