Walking circuit: a story of style

This loop hiking trail takes you from Roppenheim to Neuhaeusel through a flat landscape, typical of the Northern Ried, characterized by the predominance of cereal cultivation.

A few meters beneath your feet, the largest aquifer in Europe flows slowly toward the Rhine. On the way out, in clear weather, you will see the Black Forest and its northernmost peak: Hornisgrinde (1163 m), easily recognizable by its television tower. On the way back, the last foothills of the Northern Vosges emerge on the horizon.

Roppenheim and its surroundings were long owned by the lords of Fleckenstein, who had a castle and a hunting lodge. Traces remain near the Saint Michael church, its presbytery, and its half-timbered tithe barn. Surrounded by the Rhine forest, the village of Neuhaeusel developed in the second half of the 17th century, during the construction of the Fort-Louis fortress by Vauban, for which the inhabitants made bricks and tiles. Fishing, boating, and agriculture then took over until the mid-20th century. Traditional peasant houses still remain there.
