After the Battle of Guise at the end of August 1914, the north of the department of Aisne was invaded by the German army.
The inhabitants of the many occupied zones are experiencing a war different from that suffered by the inhabitants of the
France free. For the inhabitants of the villages of Gouy and Le Catelet, located between Cambrai and Saint-Quentin, and where the Scheldt has its source, terror reigns. Any means of communication with the rest of the country is prohibited. The occupied territories are directly used to supply food to the troops of the Reich and are considered as maneuvering tanks. Daily life is particularly difficult.
