The high forests of Retz

The forest of Retz is the largest forest massif of the department with an area of about 13,000 hectares. Mainly planted with beech trees, it also has a multitude of other species, oaks, Scots pines, firs, spruces and larches. Immortalized by d'Artagnan, the magnificent hero of Alexandre Dumas, himself a native of Villers-Cotterêts, this land unfolds a majestic part of our history: having elected it for his hunts, François 1st established his castle there in the sixteenth century.
