Costières & Camargue

This 55 km long route, which can be completed in one day from Vauvert, allows you to discover the Petite Camargue from the Costières to the ponds. You should plan for a "big day" as there are many opportunities to stop, whether to visit the wine cellars of the villages crossed, which are typical of the Languedoc wine region, such as Vauvert, Beauvoisin, Générac, Saint Gilles, Gallician, or to discover extraordinary monuments. Some belong to the past, such as the Abbey Church of Saint-Gilles and its crypt. The facade of this building is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The city of Saint-Gilles is the first stop on the Camino de Santiago from Arles. Another, more recent attraction is the VNF lock in Saint-Gilles, which connects the water level of the canal from Rhône to Sète with that of the river that feeds it.
No area is left out, as you will become familiar with the flora and fauna of this microregion, which is traversed by migratory birds, at the Scamandre discovery center, and can familiarize yourself with the taurine traditions.
We recommend traveling clockwise (except in strong Mistral winds) for a relaxed return, where stops are multiplied, and perhaps ending the day by admiring a sunset over the meadows of Cailar from the green road.
