This cycling route for the racing bike is the last stage in a series of 10 rides along the Dutch-French language border (see also https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taalgrens_in_België), from the three-country point to the North Sea. This stage runs along the French-Flemish border (also known as Schreve) between Godewaersvelde and the North Sea (De Panne and Bray-Dunes). Highlights include the tranquil countryside, several French-Flemish villages, and the coastal area with polders, dunes, seaside promenade, and beach. The outbound journey primarily goes through Dutch-speaking areas, while the return journey is through French-speaking areas, generally as close to the border as possible, but occasionally crossing the border or taking the more scenic routes. So far, I have cycled in 10 stages from the three-country point to the North Sea along the language border. See the comments for links to all 10 stages.
The ride is suitable for racing bikes. There is a section over a concrete dike along the beach at De Panne with a risk of blowing sand that you can skip if necessary. Near Adinkerke, there is also a new partially paved (gravel) bike path where you have to ride a bit slower.
The starting point is in Godewaersvelde, at the border crossing on the N333/D948 (Calicannes). From here, you ride across the border north through tranquil countryside, mainly arable farming. The first larger village is Watou. From here, the route leads to the Yser valley near Roesbrugge, and then on to the French/Belgian border village of Oost-Cappel. Here, you can find a few border posts and a small house with a barrier and a statue of a border guard sitting on a chair. The border posts have a Dutch (N) side and a French (F) side, where the N stands for Netherlands (so even before the separation of Belgium and the Netherlands). From here, you continue for a long time on a road along the border. Near the French Hondschoote, you briefly cross the border again. You are now heading towards the large transmission mast just south of the polder De Moeren. This polder, surrounded by a circular ditch, lies in both Belgium and France and is the lowest point in Belgium. On long straight roads, you ride through the polder towards the sea. At the E40 highway, you take a new tunnel under the motorway, connecting to a bike path towards the dune area of Cabour. You cycle through the dune area, along the border, and an old border post until you reach the Nieuwpoort-Dunkirk canal. You cross this over the new bike bridge. Immediately afterwards, there is a section of semi-paved bike path of 450 m (relatively manageable) along the canal. Along the canal, you proceed to Adinkerke and then further to Koksijde. At De Panne, you ride up the sea dike that takes you alongside the beach, promenade, and typical Belgian coastal buildings (flats). At the Leopold I esplanade, you leave the sea dike. A little further on, there is access to the beach. Here, you can calmly ride a section along a concrete dike by the beach. However, be careful of blowing sand and crowds. You can also skip this and follow Dynastielaan. After the concrete dike, you follow a stretch along dunes through the dune village of De Panne and go around the Westhoek dune area via N34 and N386 to the border crossing (the most western in Belgium). You follow the slightly busier road to Bray-Dunes, the northernmost village in France, where you make a detour to the seaside promenade. Here, you have a good view of Dunkirk from the beach. After the promenade, you ride inland towards Ghyvelde. Here, you re-enter the De Moeren polder (known here as Les Moëres). After the polder, you continue to Hondschoote. The church is visible from afar. After this village, you ride along quiet roads to Oost-Cappel, where you were earlier. From here, you go to the Yser, as the IJzer is called here, and over quieter roads to Houtkerque. Shortly after, you cross the border again at the Heidebeek. It starts to become a bit hilly here, and the hills Mont des Cats and Mont Noir south of Godewaersvelde and the Mont des Recollets west of Steenvoorde are already visible. Shortly afterwards, you are back at the starting point.
You will find restaurants and cafes mainly in the coastal towns of De Panne and Bray-Dunes. Outside of these areas, dining options are quite scarce, with a few establishments in Oost-Cappel, Watou, and near the starting point.
