Eilean Donan Castle is a fortress located on the small island of the same name that rises on one side of Loch Duich, in the northwest of Scotland, which in turn is connected to the nearby Atlantic Ocean via Loch Alsh. It is only accessible by boat or through a narrow stone bridge that connects the island to the shore of the lake, making it a powerful fortress that was very difficult to capture. The nearest population is Kyle of Lochalsh, less than 8 miles away and about 60 miles west of Inverness.
Eilean Donan, which simply means "island of Donnán," is named after Donnán of Eigg, a Celtic saint who was martyred in 617. It is believed that Donnán established a church on the island, although no trace of it remains.
