Epsom salts are named after the town Epsom. Epsom salt was originally prepared by boiling down mineral waters at Epsom. In 1618, Hendrick Wicker discovered here mineral sources. In the 18th century, it became a famous spa, visited by royals. The salt is a Magnesium sulfate and used for many medical purposes as a saline laxative.
