Dent is the village where the famous geologist Adam Sedgwick was born in 1785. Adam Sedgwick was not only one of the founders of modern geology but was also the teacher of Charles Darwin in Cambridge. He worked a lot on the Welsh rock strata to develop his theories on the Devonian and Cambrian period. For the mapping of these rock strata, he asked the student Charles Darwin to join him.
Adam Sedgwick lit the fire for geology in Charles Darwin. Later, during his voyage on the Beagle, Darwin would write to his sister that "there is nothing like geology; the pleasure of the first days partridge shooting or first days hunting cannot be compared to finding a fine group of fossil bones, which tell their story of former times with almost a living tongue".
