The great scientist Thomas Young was born here in Milverton on June 13, 1773 in a Quaker family. Andrew Robinson wrote a biography about this scientist: "The Last Man Who Knew Everything". He was familiar with virtually the entire scientific knowledge of the beginning of the 19th century. He was known as "the Young phenomenon." He explained the optical phenomena of the diffraction and interference of light. As a Egyptologist, he came up with the first scientific decipherment of the hieroglyphics. By 1814 Young had completely translated the "enchorial" text of the Rosetta Stone (using a list with 86 demotic words.
