West Rounton is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It is 8 miles north of Northallerton. East Rounton is about 1-mile away across the fields.
The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Rontun or Runtune, and as having 75 ploughlands and 100 acres of meadows. The name Rounton derives from the Old English hrung, and tūn . The first part refers to a type of bridge made with poles, often built over marshy ground. Historically, the village was in the wapentake of Allertonshire, today being in the Hambleton District.
