But did you know that cheese made in Stilton can not be named "Stilton Cheese" anymore. The reason is that the manufacturers of Stilton cheese applied and got a "Protected Geographical Status" in 1996. This means that outside that area, it is not allowed to use that product name. And since the "Protected Geographical Status" covers Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire, and does not include the village Stilton itself, you can't call cheese from Stilton Stilton cheese.
