Some believe that the head of explorer and mapmaker Sir Walter Releigh is still somewhere under the park of Beddington.
When Walter Religh's head was chopped off, it was sent to his wife. He married his wife secretly without permission of Queen Elizabeth. Being her maids of honour, that was enough to get sentenced to time in the Tower of London. But the marriage appears to have been a genuine love-match and survived the imprisonment.
A populat story is that his wife, Elizabeth, claimed his embalmed head and kept it in a bag for the rest of her life. Some sources state that his son inherited the embalmed head and that it was buried with him.
