Merchants from northern Europe sailed each year to the harbour of Great Yarmouth, locally known as just Yarmouth, to buy herring. There is a peculiar story related to this in the year 1238. This was the year that the merchants didn't come. It was the year that the Mongols attacked Europe. Rotting fish piled up in the port's market. This was noted down by historian Matthew Paris. It indicates how instability on European level already affected at that time local economies.
