As the winner of the 2002 Riba Stirling Prize, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a unique crossing on the river for both pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge is a new landmark for Gateshead and the Tyne, a river famous for its historic bridges. The Millennium Bridge connects Newcastle's thriving north bank with the quays of Gateshead, the new arts and culture quarter to the south.
