The great philisopher Hobbes went to Magdalen Hall, which is most closely related to Hertford College in 1603. He wrote much later (1651) the book Leviathan, based on his social contract theory. He was demonstrating the necessity of a strong central authority to avoid the evil of discord and civil war.
He was also the man who explained how arithmatic and logic was the same thing and how artificial thinking had to be based on arithmatic and logic.
