Mathematician, father of fractals and father of weather predictions Lewis Fry Richardson was superintendent of Eskdalemuir Observatory from 1913-1916. He proposed a scheme of grids to predict the weather. If you knew the values of certain environmental variables at the the center of each grid cel, you could use the physics equations to calcaulte their values at a short time later.
