Canterbury Cathedral

The Canterbury Cathedral is England's most famous cathedral and the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the primate of the Anglican Church.

The history of the cathedral dates back to the year 597. In that year, St. Augustine, sent by Pope Gregory I, brought the Christian faith to Anglo-Saxon England. St. Augustine established a church and became the first archbishop. In 1170, Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in the cathedral, and from that time, Canterbury grew into an important place of pilgrimage. In Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, pilgrims are on their way from London to this cathedral.

The celebration tower of the cathedral is 72 m high. In the crypt, there are still some graves. In the 1500s, there was the grave of Archbishop Thomas Becket here, but it was destroyed shortly thereafter. In front of the entrance to the crypt, there is a memorial monument for Thomas Becket.

In the cathedral, there are various stained glass windows to admire, depicting saints such as Peter and John, as well as Adam and Eve. On the level of the Abbey Chair lies the grave of the Black Prince.

The Canterbury Cathedral, St Augustine's Abbey, and St. Martin's Church were placed on UNESCO's World Heritage List as a collective world heritage site in 1988.
