In 1957 ontdekten schoolkinderen frondachtige afdrukken (vergelijkbaar met varenachtige planten) in de zeer oude gesteenten van Charnwood Forest. Ze namen contact op met geoloog Trevor Ford, die als eerste het belang van deze vondst inzag. In 1958 publiceerde hij de vondst en noemde de fossielen ‘Pre-Cambrische fossielen’, waarmee hij de soort de naam Charnia masoni gaf (vernoemd naar Charnwood en de ontdekker).
Tot die tijd ging men ervan uit dat er geen complexe levensvormen in het Precambrium bestonden, laat staan fossielen. Deze ontdekking was dus een enorme doorbraak: de fossiele vondsten duwden het fossielenarchief miljoenen jaren verder terug in de tijd dan tot dan toe werd aangenomen.
