The excavations at the Broch of Nybster took place in 2011. The broch is located on a peninsula on the east coast of Scotland, north of Wick in Caithness. Nybster Broch is close to the Caithness Broch Centre and is one of the more easily accessible brochs in northern Scotland. Brochs are dry stone structures from the Iron Age, resembling cooling towers, that are found only in Scotland.
In general, brochs are associated with the Hebrides, Orkney, and the Shetland Islands, but the largest concentration, with more than 200 of the approximately 700 Scottish brochs, is located in Caithness.
