Vale Street is located in the Tottersown suburb of Bristol, just south of the River Avon. The ground rises steeply from the riverbank to an area of brightly coloured painted houses that can be seen from a long way off. The area houses a tight network of very steep roads, including Vale Street. Although very short, it is reputed to be the steepest residential road in England. Terraced houses flank it with steps provided for pedestrians who have to park their vehicles at an angle to the kerb for safety reasons. It has an average gradient of 25% and a maximum of 33%.
