An Italian carpenter named Sebastiano Magnanini was found bound to a shopping trolley in the water of Regent's Canal in 2015. The suspicious murder probably had something to do with the theft or art. Magnanini was a one-time art thief. The macabre nature of the death fits within a darkly theatrical tradition of mafia interventions. Magnanini made a mark by stealing a notable artwork, Education of the Virgin, by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, an 18th-century rococo artist. It was taken from the Santa Maria della Fava church in Venice in 1993. The painting was later found in a warehouse not far from Marco Polo airport outside Venice, and Magnanini was jailed for 18 months in the late 1990s.
