Commissioned by William III, George London and Henry Wise created a maze for Hampton Court Palace in 1690. That same maze plan would be used two hundred years later by Psychologist Willard Small at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA, to test rats and their memory. The reason why Small took over this labyrinth was that he looked in the Encyclopaedia Brittanica for the word Labyrinth and found a map of the maze there. He made it into a rectangle, while that of Hampton court has the shape of a trapezium.
