Loch Lomond is the largest freshwater lake (70 km²) in Great Britain and it was formed about ten thousand years ago by a glacier. The lake, which is 38.6 km long, is very accessible and therefore one of the most popular destinations for a day out for the residents of Glasgow. For them, it's just an hour's drive. You will quickly notice that it can be crowded when you drive along the A82. The west side is overflowing with tourist and recreational facilities. Around Loch Lomond are a few attractive villages, such as Balloch and Luss. Loch Lomond literally borders the Trossachs National Park, which it is also a part of. The area has great landscape value and is at its most colorful in autumn. None other than Sir Walter Scott made the region famous; in his tales Rob Roy and The Lady of the Lake, the Trossachs serve as the backdrop.
