Though not the highest peak in the Mourne Mountains, Slieve Binnian (747m) is a firm favourite with many hikers. In addition to fantastic views, the massive summit tors lend it a unique character, making it one of the most interesting mountains in Ireland.

Follow the Carrick Little track to a gate set in the Mourne Wall. Turn left here, and climb directly up Binnian’s slopes, using the wall as a guide. Veer right near the top to reach the summit, with extensive views compensating for your exertion. Take time here to explore the bulbous summit tors, a playground for local rock climbers.

Head north past several smaller outcrops known as the Black Castles, to reach the North Tor. The view across the Silent Valley and wider Mournes is superb from here, encompassing virtually every peak in the range.

A steep descent along Binnian’s north ridge brings you to the col beneath Slievelamagan. Turn right here, joining a path that descends southeast past Blue Lough. The path broadens into a track, and carries you all the way back to Carrick Little car park.

Chose from several car parks at Carrick-Little, including a secure, paid parking area a short distance up the track

Bring proper mountain gear, including decent boots, extra clothing and food

Informal paths have formed over much of the route, but you’ll still need good navigation skills in bad weather
