We tried to find the most direct route possible between London and Cardiff that was also reasonably quiet and pretty with lots of opportunities for pub stops and not too many hills! Surface is mostly good though rather bumpy and muddy along some of the canal sections. We used hybrid bikes but you could probably do it on a road bike, at a push.
It took us 4 days with a civilised number of pub stops.
