From Kirkby Stephen to Brompton on Swale

This is the sixth day of the bike ride along the Hadrian Wall and Wainwright's Coast to Coast route. The low budget route goes from campsite to campsite. The section along the Hadrian Wall follows National Cycle Route 72 to Carlisle. After Carlisle, the track curves towards St. Bees, the starting point of Wainwrights coast to coast from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. This coast to coast route is originally a hiking trail. I have tried to include bike paths and quiet roads that are as close to the walking route as possible.

The low budget route goes from campsite to campsite . The part along the Hadrian's Wall follows the National Cycle Route 72 till Carlisle. After Carlisle the track bends in the direction of St. Bees the starting point of Wainwrights Coast to Coast from the Irish sea to the North sea. This coast to coast route is a walking route. I tried to use cyclingpaths and quiet roads that are situated as near as possible to the walkingroute.

On this day you can take it easy. Though.... 5 km after leaving Kirkby Stephen you will have to deal with a steep slope of between 17 and 20%. You rise 100 meters over a distance of 500 meters. Soon after overcoming this col you come close to the Swale River, making the road milder. After Keld, your bike turns into a motorcycle because from there it mainly goes downhill to Richmond. There is plenty of time to enjoy this beautiful area in the Yorkshire dales National Park. In Keld there is a café where you can enjoy a drink in the afternoon. Step off every now and then to take in the valley of the Swale. So beautiful.

In Richmond you can do your shopping at the Coop in the main square. There are good restaurants and fancy fish and chips? There is a good fish and chips shop on the main street that runs through Richmond.

The campsite is located outside Richmond in Brompton on Swale. There are hardly any facilities for hikers and Bikers. To get out of the wind or rain you can go to the garbage containers.

In Keld is a café that opens at noon. Step off your bike so now and then to take a good look at the Swale dale. So nice.

In Richmond there are plenty of shops. You can buy your food at Coop on the central square of Richmond. There are some good restaurants and do you fancy fish and chips? Go to the main street that goes through Richmond.

The campsite is outside Richmond at Brompton on Swale. There are barely accomodation for Hikers and Bikers. To shelter for rain and wind you can sit near the garbidge bins.
