A bridge too far for islanders
The Isle of Skye, the largest of the Inner Hebrides, is no longer an island in the literal sense. Since 1995, it has been connected by a toll bridge to the Scottish mainland. While this was a great thing for tourists - and for motorcyclists - many Scots have not and do not yet approve of this innovation, even though the toll was abolished at the end of 2004. Highlanders are islanders at heart: they have always remained particularly attached to this status.
