At first glance, Apollonia is located in a remarkable place, in the middle of Sifnos. But historical places like Apollonia are rarely located somewhere by chance. This is a very favorable location both in terms of (variation in) land use and in terms of accessibility. Around Apollonia you will find a sample of different landscapes within 2 km, offering a wide variety of land uses. 1. the fertile plateau area of Katavati-Apollonia-Exambela-Plakoto (still intensively used for horticulture) 2. the terrace area in the greenschist valleys of Kato Petali and Kastro with the beautifully stacked terrace walls of greenschist tablets (unfortunately now more and more neglected and in the past used for grain cultivation and olive growing) 3. the arid highland of the marble mountain Profitis Ilias (still used as grazing areas for goats and sheep) 4. the valley of the Skafia and Kamares rivers (a narrow snake of wetlands with a ribbon of trees (wood), shrubs and flowers (honey). Apollonia is also located on the watershed ridge of two of the most important drainage areas (hydrographic basins): the Kamares basin (with its +/- 25 km2 the largest on the island) and the basin. of Kastro. Due to its slightly higher location and its location a little further from the coast, it was therefore slightly safer if, as in the past, you were regularly attacked by piracy (Kastro regularly faced that problem). By the time the pirates got there (if they had a long climb to do so) you had long since hidden your most important belongings and escaped. But the location of Apolloni is higher up but not too high (this is, for example, the case for the archaeological site of Agios Andreas which was later abandoned), making it very easy for farmers such as those of the Kamares valley and the terraced valleys of Kastro was available to market their crops.
