How important the wind was for trade in Athens can still be inferred from the very well-preserved building with its octagonal shape, referring to the 8 wind directions: the Tower of the Winds. A bronze weather vane in the shape of Triton indicated the wind direction. Each of the wind directions is represented by a relief. At the bottom of the relief was a sundial to indicate the time. Inside, there was an ingenious water clock installed to measure time during cloudy weather and at night. Those winds were essential for shipping and hence trade with the international markets around the Mediterranean area.
