The Dystos lake is a closed basin. That's very rare in nature. Except in limestone areas. This is an example of a dolina. A dolina is a close depression in limestone, starting by a collapse of a cave.
Lake Dystos is presently largely drained, and looks more like a swamp than a lake. Since ancient times this place was known for its snakes. In the 1980s, the Dystos lake was filled with grass which was set on fire by farmers to make more farmland. This act caused devastation of much of the plants and the environment in that area. A part of the lake later regenerated.
