Sifnos has been renowned for its pottery since ancient times. The island's popularity among potters stems from a combination of natural resources, geographical location, and a deep-rooted tradition passed down through generations. Sifnos boasts rich clay soil with high-quality, fire-resistant clay. This clay, derived from the erosion of the island's schists, is particularly well-suited for making ceramics that withstand high temperatures. Pottery is one of the oldest crafts on Sifnos, with roots dating back to the Early Cycladic period (c. 3000 BC). Over the centuries, the craft has been refined and spread throughout Greece, thanks in part to the Sifniotes who brought their knowledge to the mainland and other islands.
