Milies is a typical example of what the French geographers call "l'haibtat pêrché" or the hanging villages. People in remote and unprotected areas such as the Pelion peninsula preferred to live higher up in the mountains a few centuries ago, because it was much safer. The unsafe situation near the coast was due to piracy and malaria.
