In the winter of 1941, a ship carrying prisoners, Sebastiano Veniero, was torpedoed by an English submarine and the dead Italians. Englishmen and New Zealanders were buried near the church.
The church was looted in 1945 by retreating German soldiers and the beautiful Byzantine icons were lost.
