The captain of a sailing ship with wine, made a wish in Agios Nikolaos during a great storm, while sailing between Methoni and Pylos. The captain was hit by a large wave, lost consciousness and when he came to, the crew had managed to navigate the boat safely to the port of Pylos. The captain kept his vow and built the chapel. According to tradition, the mud used in the building was made from wine instead of water.
Originally, the annual celebrations were held on December 6 (the day is Saint Nicholas), but it was discovered that on December 6, weather conditions made it difficult to approach the church, so it was decided that the chapel would be inaugurated on May 9 in memory of Saint Nicolas. Nicholas the Younger, martyred in the town of Vounena.
