Near Palekastro,on the northeast coast of the island, are the ruins of a settlement that flourished during the Late Minoan period (1550-1220 BC). Also at the site there are some cemeteries excavated that date to the Early and Middle Minoan periods (3000 -- 1550 BC). The ruins consist of streets of the settlement, houses and even a sophisticated drainage system. The village once covered an area of more than 50,000 m². The well-known Paleokastro Koura, a gold and ivory statue, was found here and is currently on display at the Sitia Museum.
