Koulés is a fortress in the port of Heraklion. It was built around 1540 by the Venetians.
There are twenty rooms and storages on the ground floor behind thick walls where medieval cannonballs are still stored. On the roof, there is a large gallery offering stunning views of the sea. Below the fortress is a dark secret corridor (entry is allowed at the beginning), used to escape and surprise the enemy at the exit.
When the Turks took control of Crete, the fortress was also used as a prison.
It's a remarkably well-preserved example of 16th-century military architecture.
