Most villages on Lefkada were built in the past in remote, invisible or difficult to reach places. That had everything to do with the danger that came from the sea. In the past there were many pirates or enemy fleets that scoured the coast for loot. And an easily findable or accessible place was not wise to choose as a place to build a village. However, Marantochori does not meet the criterion of not really being visible to pirate attacks. That is why it was built on a steep slope so that it was easier to defend. Some houses had loopholes, towers and cellars that could be completely closed off.
